Green Initiative
- Paper Reduction – We will save paper by doing all applications, promotions, and pre-race communications electronically, and will encourage sponsors to send us information to blast out in pre-race newsletters, as opposed to wasting lots of paper on glossy ads in the race bags (which most people throw out anyway).
- Recycled Materials – We plan on spending the little extra money it takes to purchase 100% recycled materials whenever possible (cups, plates, napkins, bags, flatware).
- Finish Line Recycling – Last year, we tried desperately to separate plastics and cardboards from other finish line waste, but with everyone tired after a tough event, it's tough to enforce. We'll have our bins clearly marked, and communicate our recycling policy to all athletes in the weeks leading up to the event.
- Bamboo T-Shirts: In addition to being soft, protective, and all natural, bamboo is grown without pesticides or chemicals, is 100% biodegradeable, and naturally regenerative. Bamboo is actually a tropical grass with an extensive root system that sends out an average of four to six new shoots per year, naturally replenishing itself and growing to heights of 60 feet or more. Some bamboo species grow up to 4 feet per day and can be harvested every 3 to 4 years. Bamboo is planted and grown on family-owned farms that have been in agricultural use for generations. None of the fiber comes from tropical forests. Over 2.5 billion people work with or depend on bamboo as a natural resource.
- Leave No Trace – In that spirit, we also don't want to leave any trash on the streets we're traveling through, and our race team will not leave paint or markers on local streets. We'll remind everyone incessantly not to drop food and gel packets on the course but will also do a thorough sweep of the entire bike and run course to ensure we're not leaving surprises on anyone's front lawn. In addition, we’ll be stricter in our enforcement of USAT rules and give time penalties for littering on the course.
- Carbon Neutral – If we're going to do this, we're going all out. We're using a green registration system that allows all entrants the opportunity to offset the carbon pollution they create by driving to the race. This is 100% optional – our race team will offset any pollution that athletes opt not to offset, as well as all pollution from our race vehicles circling the course all weekend. Offsets are so named because they fund projects which offset greenhouse gases (like CO2) that are emitted into the atmosphere by activities like driving and flying.
- Carpooling – Another simple way to reduce our collective carbon emissions on race-day is by having fewer vehicles drive to the race site. One thing I love about the Randolph Tri is that it's a very "local" event, with most athletes knowing each other and not traveling too far. Whenever possible, we'd love for you to connect with those friends or club members and drive over together. We'll even try to come up with fun incentives for those of you that carpool (TBA). If you want to help out, we will have a Google map showing where all registered athletes are traveling from, and you can set up central meeting points through the race’s message board.
Carbon Offsets:
The registration system allows an event to offset greenhouse gas emissions resulting from participant travel. An offset takes the form of carbon credits, purchased from a reputable, high-quality source. An event director chooses how much travel to offset, the source of the credits, and who pays for them (the event or the participant).
If your event chooses to use this module, an extra step will be presented to participants as part of the registration process. This step will collect information used to calculate the participant's greenhouse gas footprint, as well as convert the footprint to a fee used to purchase credits.
Is an offset required? NJMultiSport will offset participant travel. Credits can be purchased by the event itself, by participants exclusively, or a combination of the two. Are participants required to pay for their travel offsets? No |
For those participants not electing to purchase offsets, will the event offset their travel? Yes |
